The WeWALK Smart Cane is a smart white cane built with the blind and partially sighted community. It combines the reliability of a traditional cane with obstacle detection at chest height, turn-by-turn voice navigation, and AI-powered assistance, helping people explore new places and make independent decisions wherever they are.
The latest version, Smart Cane 2, can be controlled directly with buttons on the cane, so people can use the WeWALK app for navigation without also holding their phone. A built-in voice assistant answers questions and gives local recommendations, and safety features include obstacle detection, a flashlight, and alerts. When it is not connected, it still works as a lightweight traditional cane for ground detection.
WeWALK has also built a wider set of tools around the cane. WeASSIST connects people with trained agents who provide live visual assistance through the WeWALK app, for tasks like navigating a busy airport or reading text, and the AI Mobility Platform helps people learn essential cane skills at their own pace. Orientation and mobility specialists can use the platform to support their clients beyond traditional instruction.
WeWALK is endorsed by CNIB, RNIB, and Vision Australia, and its work shows how thoughtful hardware and software design, shaped by lived experience, can expand independence for people who are blind or have low vision.
